How does 3D TV work?

By Jeremy Zerr

When I first heard about 3D TV technology, I first thought, "What kind of gimmic is this?". The TVs are more money and you have to buy a pair of expensive glasses for everyone in your house to wear. The glasses can run somewhere between $100 to $200 each. Outfitting a family of three kids could cost more than a really nice "old-fashioned" 2D TV.

Why are the 3D glasses so expensive?

The 3D glasses are so expensive because they are actually electronic glasses. I know, I know, who needs electronic glasses. But to watch 3D TV using the current technology, you do. The easiest way to describe how the 3D glasses allow you to see 3D TV is by recalling all the funny stuff our eye doctor has us do.

Do you remember the test the eye doctor does where he puts the paddle in front of one eye and has you read the chart, or align two boxes above each other? Then you repeat it with the other eye.

This is actually what the 3D glasses are doing, but electronically.

The 3D glasses are actually made of active LCD panels, and are synchronized up with the TV. The TV will display the image it wants your right eye to see, and will send a signal to the 3D glasses to block out your left eye. Then the TV will switch to show the image meant for the left eye, and block out the right eye in the glasses. This gives a 3D effect because your eyes see two different images.

The images on the TV flash so fast and the glasses operate so fast, that our eyes and brain cannot visually tell the difference or see any flickering effect.

How are 3D TV's different than regular TVs?

The only two differences is that a 3D TV will have a minimum refresh rate of 120Hz and have the capability to sync with the special 3D glasses.

Why the higher required refresh rate you ask? Well, since the TV is putting out one image for the right eye, followed by one image for the left eye, this effectively cuts the refresh rate in half. So it is an effective refresh rate of 60Hz, which is pretty normal for TVs.

Lots of hype, but lots of cool technology too

So 3D TV has gotten lots of hype, but I think the technology behind it is pretty interesting, but I still think it is expensive. But as is common with most new technologies, in time the prices will come down, and there will be more standards with the 3D glasses within the industry. If you are like me, and like to wait out new technology, cheers to watching our TV in 2D with no dorky glasses.
