What are Sabermetrics?
By Jeremy Zerr
If you are a baseball fan, or even if you just play fantasy baseball, you probably have heard of Sabermetrics. Sabermetrics is a method of analyzing baseball through in-game statistics. While baseball statistics have been around for a long time, Sabermetrics takes baseball statistics to the next level. How did the name start? Sabermetrics started as a spin-off of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). That organization had been striving to come up with ways to objectively compare baseball players, which led them to coming up with new statistical measures outside of the normal hits, runs, batting average, slugging percentage, ERA, and the similar core baseball statistics. What are some of the statistics brought about by Sabermetrics? A couple of my favorite Sabermetric statistics are OPS and Defense Independent Pitching Statistics. OPS is on-base percentage plus slugging percentage. I like this statistic because it accounts for a player being able to get on base, which requires discipline at the plate to earn walks and have a decent batting average, but also to be able to hit for power. Defense Independent Pitching Statistics (DIPS) help determine how good a pitcher regardless of (sometimes in spite of) the defense behind the pitcher. There are a lot of different individual metrics within DIPS, but all take out fielding from the equation, instead looking at things that the pitcher directly controls, like strikeouts, walks, and the type of contact made by the batter, like a line drive, ground ball, or fly ball. How has it improved the game? It has been discussed in various published books how certain major league teams use Sabermetrics in determining how to effectively build up a team, and how to analyze what players to go after in the middle of the season before the trade deadline to add to their team to make a playoff run. Since I'm a math geek at heart, I love baseball not only for the game itself, but because of the vast statstical analysis that can be used to put subjective opinions to the test against objective statistics. |

Very interesting, I'd never heard of sabermetrics. It's like a science isn't it? And I thought it was just a bunch of guys trying to whack a ball.
Thanks for this enlighting baseball terminology explaination. My brother, who started an orgainization to mentor community boys, will find this interesting to share with his group. He uses, arts, socials, work projects and sports in mentoring boys and young men.
